Those of you hoping to avoid Auckland house prices by finding a nice spot in South Italy’s spectacular South Tyrol region are out of luck, with the local government cracking down on foreign buyers in a way that would make Winston Peters green with envy. Not only are overseas buyers being banned from purchasing a house, Italian citizens from outside the region are also banned.
The governor of the largely German-speaking region issued the decree with intimidating declaration that is “for the defence of the Heimat” – or “defence of the homeland” – the justification being that too many ‘outsiders’ were buying second homes, driving up prices for locals. Sounding familiar?
South Tyrol borders Germany and is a popular tourist destination due to its location within the Dolomite mountain range, a World Heritage site.
