Newmarket’s little sushi heaven

“&Sushi” owners Jeff Kim, Jay Oh are both self proclaimed sushi fanatics and fathers. Together they had the idea to create a sushi shop with a healthier flare. Using local organic produce, free range chicken and serve both vegan and gluten free options –  they are now proud to be making sushi and other Korean/Japanese dishes that they are happy to feed their kids and other conscious consumers. Their sushi is not only healthier than others out there – but it is also delicious and flawlessly presented. They have a keen eye for food presentation.
Jeff and Jay opened shop in October this year in Newmarket, when they saw the need for a nice eatery that specialises in sushi and other asian cuisine. It took just over two months to complete the renovations to their Teed Street location. They wanted the fit out to be use natural wood, black & white, greenery – Jeff describes the look as Scandinavian minimalism. They came up with the idea, and it was executed by The Fitout Company.
Jeff has been in the hospitality industry for 15 years working in 5 Star Hotels, Managing Bars, or Restaurants in the US, Japan as well here in New Zealand. Head chef Jay Oh has been in the kitchen for about 15 years himself. Jay grew up with his parent’s running a restaurant in Korea before going on to join the army as a chef. He’s also been a chef for big restaurant chains, and has recently worked for Food TV shows in Korea before returning to New Zealand. They have a team of six or seven people working with them in the store, many of whom have sushi cooking backgrounds.

Something on the menu thay are proud to offer is Kimchi. It comes from the owners heritage and background in Korean cusine. Jeff said “Kimchi is something we eat most days and something we can not live without due to it’s probiotic and anti oxidant properties.”
