SWITCH AND DITCH FOR OATS

It’s time to recognise the oldest superfood in Kiwi memory – the humble oat. Oats are often left off health food listicles despite their great benefits: per 100g, wholegrain oats have 205 percent more fibre, 295 percent more protein, and 225 percent more iron than kale.

“Oats are an easy win if you’re trying to eat foods which are as close to their natural state as possible,” said Jaimee Freeman of Nairn’s Oatcakes New Zealand. “However, they’re still not as popular in New Zealand as they should be. We only consume five percent of the total global oat harvest.”

To combat this, Nairn’s is launching its Switch and Ditch campaign. Starting from October 1st, Nairn’s will be encourage customers to switch out a meal or part of a meal for oats.

Some great ways to consume oats include:

Porridge: dressed up with a sprinkling of fruits and spices, or drizzled with nut butter or honey, porridge is an easy to way to make oats to your taste.

Oatcakes: oatcakes like the ones Nairn makes are protein-packed and filling, and can be spread with anything you like. Peanut butter and banana on an oatcake is an easy, no-cook alternative to toast in the morning.

Smoothies: add a handful of oats to your smoothie recipe for added fibre, protein, and texture.

Take the Switch and Ditch challenge for 21 days, starting on October 1st. You can share your experience on social media with the hashtags #wholesomeside and #NairnsOatcakesNZ.
